What is wear-resistant steel?
Wear-resistant steel has been developed for components that are constantly in contact with abrasive materials such as sand, stone, minerals, cement, scrap metal and other bulk goods. The combination of hardness and toughness makes it suitable for conditions in which ordinary structural steel would wear out too quickly.
Even wear-resistant steel does not have an unlimited lifespan. The rate at which the material wears is determined by, among other things, the processed product, the particle size, the impact speed and angle, the operational load and the shape of the component.
When wear is concentrated in specific locations, it is not always necessary to replace the entire structure. The affected part can sometimes be locally repaired or replaced and then protected with a material that is better suited to the conditions.
Repair or replace?
We first determine whether the underlying component is structurally still suitable for repair. To do this, we look beyond just the worn surface. The location and depth of the wear, the remaining wall thickness and the load on the component also help determine what is technically sound.
If the main structure is still in good condition, the repair may consist of repair welding, replacing worn sections, fitting wear-resistant plates or adjusting the material flow. By focusing protection on the most heavily stressed areas, the service life of the component can be extended and future maintenance becomes more predictable.
When the structure can no longer be reliably repaired, replacement remains the right choice. We give that advice if the technical condition of the component gives cause for it.
The right wear-resistant material for the application
Different types of wear call for different materials. Sliding abrasion, concentrated impact and combinations of these each place different demands on a component. Accessibility, operating temperature, weight, geometry and future maintenance also play a part.
Depending on the application, Mantrec can work with wear-resistant sheet steel, replaceable wear parts, locally reinforced sections or other specialist wear-resistant materials. Existing components can be repaired or modified. If necessary, we manufacture new parts suitable for the chosen wear protection.
Because of this, we are not tied to a single product or brand, but can choose the solution that technically best suits the installation.
ArmorRaptor wear protection
Mantrec is a dealer of ArmorRaptor and applies these solutions to installations that are subjected to heavy loads from abrasion and impact.
The ArmorRaptor range comprises wear-resistant plates and components designed to protect critical areas in industrial installations. These products are an excellent choice for demanding applications, particularly where conventional materials do not offer sufficient service life.
We use ArmorRaptor when its properties are suited to the operating conditions. In other situations, a different wear-resistant material or a bespoke combination may be more suitable. The choice depends on the wear mechanism, the design and the desired maintenance interval.
